A Little About Human Performance Technology (HPT)

I spent a few years studying HPT, so what I write here doesn’t scratch the surface. So, if you are new to HPT or performance improvement for organizations here is a little starter.

Human Performance Technology (HPT) is a systematic approach to improving performance in the workplace. It’s all about identifying the root causes of poor performance, and then developing and implementing strategies to improve it.

HPT can be used in a wide range of industries, from manufacturing and healthcare to education and government. It’s based on the idea that performance problems are not usually the result of individual failure, but rather a failure of the system as a whole. By analyzing the system, HPT practitioners can identify the factors that are contributing to poor performance and develop solutions to address them.

HPT is based on a number of principles that guide the process. These include:

  • Performance is a function of the system: HPT recognizes that performance is influenced by a wide range of factors, including the work environment, equipment, policies and procedures, and individual characteristics.
  • Focus on results: The goal of HPT is to improve performance and achieve specific results, such as increased productivity or improved quality.
  • Partnership: HPT practitioners work closely with managers, employees, and other stakeholders to identify and address performance problems.
  • Continuous improvement: HPT is an ongoing process, and it requires continuous evaluation and improvement to ensure that performance remains at a high level.

Overall, HPT is a valuable tool for organizations looking to improve performance and achieve their goals. By focusing on the system as a whole, and working closely with stakeholders, HPT practitioners can develop and implement effective solutions that lead to improved performance and increased success.
